Sharpie Watercolour Art Coasters

Looking for a fun, funky, Father’s Day gift? Look no further than these easy to make, stunning tile coasters!

You will need:

  • A selection of permanent markers
  • 90+% isopropyl alcohol – we used this Rex 99% one from Bunnings
  • Eyedroppers/paint pipettes
  • Spray Fixative – we used this Helmar one from the Ribbon Rose (also available at the Warehouse)
  • Spray varnish/polyurethane – we used the Helmar Gloss Varnish, also from the Ribbon Rose or the Warehouse
  • Adhesive backed felt – we used black Arbee Sticky Backed Felt from Spotlight

Instructions:

  1. Colour in your tiles using your favourite colours.  Cover the whole tile with shapes and patterns, don’t leave any white space
  2. With isopropyl alcohol in the eyedropper, carefully drip it onto the tile. The tip is to do this slowly. Add a drop, then wait…the drop will break down the ink’s chemical bonds and cause it to spread over the surface of the tile in a swirl of colour.  Then add another drop, and wait…then another! Don’t add too many drops at a time or your colour will all blur into one.
  3. When you’re happy with your design, leave it to dry for around an hour
  4. Spray the tile with Fixative – this prevents your colours ‘moving’ when you seal it with spray varnish. Allow this to dry for around 30 minutes
  5. Spray the tile with Varnish or polyurethane to seal and protect it.  Give it two or three coats for maximum protection
  6. Once it’s dry, cut a piece of sticky backed felt the same size as your tile, and carefully stick it to the back. This will prevent the tile scratching the surface of your tables.

Why not make a whole set for the father figure in your life?
